The story

Hammersmith perfumes named for London moments

4160Tuesdays is a London perfume house that has made its scents by hand since 2011. The perfumer is Sarah McCartney, who was head writer at Lush for 14 years, writing the words for its products. She began making perfume seriously around 2010, after writing a novel about a perfumer and finding she could not buy the scents she had described. The name is a sum: if we live to 80, we get 4160 Tuesdays.

Every perfume is made by hand in batches of 50 to 200 bottles at the studio on Raynham Road in Hammersmith, which also runs perfume-making workshops. Many scents start from a place or a person at one moment. London 1969 uses only materials that existed in that year, and Hammersmith Tea & Biscuits, from 2019, was the first of a set about the area the studio had just moved to.

To smell the range in London, go to the studio outlet at 42A Raynham Road, W6 0HY. It has a sniffing area and is usually open on weekdays from 10:30 to 18:00, but the house asks you to call or email first so someone is there to help. In Richmond, the perfume shop Parfum Le Dance at 8 Paved Court stocks it too. A 30 ml bottle of London 1969 costs £65. Start with London 1969, a citrus and woods scent that walks from Hyde Park through King's Road to Soho.

  1. London 1969The Summer of Love in three parts, sunny Hyde Park, upbeat King's Road and darker Soho, made only from materials known in 1969.
  2. Warm Sands Blue OceanA day by a warm sea, from the poolside to the beach to a swim, with suntan lotion, sea air and sun-warmed skin.
  3. Hammersmith Tea & BiscuitsHow Britons get through hard times together, over black tea and lemon and ginger biscuits with toasted hazelnuts.
