The story

Amouage, the gift of kings made in Muscat

Amouage was founded in Muscat, Oman, in 1983 by the Albusaidi family, at the request of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The house calls its purpose the Gift of Kings, and its Gold Man was the Sultan's gift to kings and princes around the world. Sayyid Badr was the founding chairman, and his brother Sayyid Khalid took over in 2003. The company is run by Oman Perfumery LLC, part of the Omani SABCO Group.

Its perfumers compose in Paris, Grasse, Geneva and New York, and the perfumes are blended by hand and aged at the Amouage Manufacture in Muscat, a building that opened in December 2012. Visitors there can watch the work from maceration to bottling and packaging. Most scents rest for weeks before bottling: Gold Woman gets three weeks of maceration and three of maturation. Rose, frankincense and ambergris form the house triad.

In Muscat, its first boutique, at the Sabco Centre, reopened in March 2025 after an 18 month redesign, with a 7 metre sculpture of a frankincense tree at its centre. It has another of its own boutiques on the third floor of the Mall of Oman, and the Manufacture and Visitors' Centre in Seeb is open on weekdays from 8:30 to 16:30. On its international site a 100 ml bottle costs US$395. Try Gold Man first: it carries Omani rock rose, Hojari frankincense and golden ambergris.
