A scent for every New York neighbourhood
Bond No. 9 was born at 9 Bond Street in NoHo, where its perfume debuted in 2003. Its founder and chief executive, Laurice Rahmé, became the first woman in New York to head a perfumery, and she oversaw the bottle and boutique designs. The house set out to give each New York neighbourhood its own scent, and it opened with 16 of them.
By 2013 it had more than 60 fragrances, most named after places in the city such as Central Park South and Madison Square Park. Wikipedia says all its products are made in the New York metro area. Astor Place and Brooklyn won FiFi Awards in 2009. The house calls itself daringly independent and shamelessly New York.
In New York you can buy at its four boutiques: 9 Bond Street at Broadway and Lafayette, 399 Bleecker Street at 11th Street in the West Village, 897 Madison Avenue at 73rd Street and 645 Fifth Avenue at 51st Street. Neighbourhood scents such as Astor Place and Bleecker Street cost $450 and $480 for 100 ml. Try Bleecker Street at the shop on that street: a day-into-evening scent of violet leaf, cassis and caramel.
