The story

Natural perfume from Sapporo, built on agarwood and flowers

Di Ser is an all-natural perfume line from Sapporo, on Hokkaido in northern Japan, established in 1999. It is made by Essentia, a Sapporo company with its own farm and research work, whose director is Yasuyuki Shinohara. Its emblem is the lotus, which rises clean from muddy water and stands for enlightenment.

The perfumes use only natural fragrance materials, plant-based alcohol and water. Much of the palette is Japanese: kyara agarwood, yuzu, Japanese rose, hinoki and Hokkaido lavender, along with sandalwood and jasmine. Luckyscent, its Los Angeles stockist, says the scents are mixed slowly, in the spirit of Slow Food. Most come in 33 ml bottles.

To smell the range in Japan, go to the Essentia shop on the ground floor of the ZONE Building, Odori Nishi 20-1-3, Chuo-ku, Sapporo, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Sundays and holidays. Prices run from ¥11,000 for an eau de parfum to ¥132,000 for Kyara. Try Hana no Oto first: it pairs roses with agarwood, the house's signature material, at ¥33,000, a quarter of Kyara's price.

  2. SasoraAgarwood brightened with yuzu.
  3. Hana no OtoRoses laid over agarwood.
