The story

A Florentine apothecary from 1561 that now makes perfume

Farmacia SS. Annunziata 1561 began in 1561, when Domenico Brunetti opened an apothecary shop near the Duomo in Florence. In 1876 it became a pharmacy named after the Annunciation scene on the ceramic image above its door, and in 1935 it took the name Farmacia della SS. Annunziata. The Azzerlini family has owned it since 1970, and Elena Azzerlini leads the brand today.

Its own products came later. Carlo and Laura Azzerlini launched a first cosmetics line in 1985, the laboratory moved to new premises in 1991, and the perfume line followed between 2004 and 2008. Today the house sells perfumes, home scents and skincare, made by its artisans with modern equipment, and its fragrances are composed by outside perfumers. The pharmacy business itself has moved out of the historic centre.

The historic shop at Via dei Servi 80r keeps its 17th-century furniture and is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 19:00 and Saturday from 10:30 to 19:00. A second shop at Via Porta Rossa 43r recreates the same layout and also opens on Sunday afternoons. A 100 ml Spigo Toscano costs €146. Try it first: it is the house's picture of fresh Tuscan landscapes, with orange, neroli, mint and lavender.

  1. Spigo ToscanoThe fresh Tuscan countryside in orange, neroli and bergamot, then mint, geranium, lavender and heliotrope.
  2. Cuoio ToscanoA leather scent with tobacco leaf, labdanum and incense over benzoin, amber and sandalwood.
  3. Giardino dell'IrisThe delicacy of iris, set between bergamot and lemon blossom and a warm base of myrrh and vanilla.
