The story

Frau Tonis Parfum, Berlin scents named after a grandmother

Frau Tonis Parfum began in Berlin in 2009, when its founders looked for a perfumery they liked, found none and built their own brand. Founder Stefanie Hanssen named it after her grandmother, Toni-Luise, who lived among the smokestacks and coal of the Ruhr and loved good perfume. The team came from photography, art, writing and strategy rather than chemistry.

The house makes 36 unisex perfumes by hand in its own Berlin manufactory, as eau de parfum and a stronger parfum. They are vegan and come in plain bottles without logos, and visitBerlin notes the Bauhaus style of the packaging. Many carry the city in their names, such as No. 10 Linde Berlin and No. 65 Eau de Berlin. No. 37 Veilchen, inspired by the 1920s, is still made unchanged.

In Berlin, go to its own atelier and shop at Zimmerstraße 13, near Checkpoint Charlie, open Monday to Wednesday 10:00 to 18:00 and Thursday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00. Next to the shop you can book a workshop to blend a perfume of your own; one writer's session took about an hour and a half, and the recipe is kept for reorders. A 100 ml bottle of Linde Berlin costs €120. Try Linde Berlin first: it is meant as a walk under the city's linden trees, with honey over the blossom.

  1. No. 10 Linde BerlinBerlin in a bottle without postcard clichés: linden blossom, green leaves and golden honey over the asphalt.
  2. No. 18 Bogota BerlinA tribute to a Berlin cult hotel, where ripe fig meets black pepper and violet meets cedar.
  3. No. 19 Oud WeissAn oud made bright and clear, quiet by day and lively at night, with bergamot, tobacco and smoke.
  4. No. 37 VeilchenA violet from the spirit of the 1920s that the house still makes unchanged.
