Vidushi Vijayvergiya launched ISAK in Lucknow in 2018, the newest chapter of a family perfume trade that began with Chhunnamal Vijayvergiya in the 1850s. The family trade has roots in the royal courts of Lucknow, and the house makes its attars and perfumes by the deg-bhapka method. Its best-known scent, First Rain, uses mitti (baked clay) to capture the smell of rain on dry earth.

The story

A Lucknow attar family's newest chapter

ISAK Fragrances was founded in 2018 by Vidushi Vijayvergiya, the newest step in a family perfume trade from Uttar Pradesh in India. The house traces it to the royal courts of Lucknow in the 1850s, where Chhunnamal Vijayvergiya made natural attars loved by the Nawabs. Later generations sourced oils and spices, exported attars to Europe in the 1930s and added retail in the 1980s. The name comes from the Hindi word ishq, which means passion or deep love.

ISAK makes attars and eau de parfums, alongside a range of home fragrance. The house says every fragrance is made with deg-bhapka, the traditional Indian process, and blended by hand from rare, naturally derived ingredients. Its collections include First Rain, built on the smell of wet earth, the Love Note perfumes, which follow the stages of love, and Royal Awadh.

ISAK has its own store in Lucknow at 4/41 Shaheed Path, Patrakar Puram, Vivek Khand 2, Gomti Nagar, open every day from 10 am to 10 pm, according to its store list. The same list names partner shops in Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bengaluru and Goa. A 50 ml First Rain perfume costs ₹3,200 and a 9 ml mini ₹800. Try First Rain first: it aims to bottle the joy of the first monsoon shower.
