Scottish places, made into perfume in Stockbridge
Jorum Studio is an Edinburgh perfume house led by Scottish perfumer Euan McCall. He started the business in 2010 as Jorum Laboratories, after formulating fragrances for other brands. Since 2016 he has run it with Chloe Mullen, and in 2019 they launched it under its current name, Jorum Studio.
The house says every fragrance is conceived, formulated, made, macerated, bottled and finished in-house, mixing natural materials with modern aroma molecules. Its first shop opened in May 2021 on St Stephen Street in Stockbridge, with a micro-lab for creating and developing scents and part of an archive of vintage materials. Each extrait in its Scottish Odyssey collection carries a place reference, from Glencoe to the Corryvreckan whirlpool off Jura.
Its own shop and micro-lab is at 12 St Stephen Street, EH3 5AL, open Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 17:00. A second shop is at 2 Marylebone Street in London. A Scottish Odyssey extrait costs £89 for 30 ml and £132 for 50 ml. Smell Gorseland first: its place reference is Salisbury Crags in Edinburgh, with gorse flower, chamomile and crab apple, so you can compare it with the crags on a walk.
- GorselandGold gorse blooming on the bare rock of Salisbury Crags, where beauty and dereliction meet.
- FirewaterA smoky beach bonfire by the Corryvreckan whirlpool off Jura, with black tea, kelp and peat.
- SpiritcaskA spirit maker breathing in an empty barrel at Queen's Dock in Glasgow: malt, cognac and whisky lactone.
- Rose HighlandA paper rose thrown onto wet coastal rocks, after Buachaille Etive Mòr in Glencoe.
- CarduusThe thistle and its old Scottish motto, in dry herbs, honey and tobacco.
- ArboristThe Green Man and our stormy bond with nature, after Scotland's native woodlands.
