The story

Scottish rock and forest, bottled in Edinburgh

Kingdom Scotland is an Edinburgh fragrance house founded by Imogen Russon-Taylor, who spent nearly 20 years in whisky and luxury goods and studied earth sciences at Edinburgh University. When she went looking, she could find no Scottish fragrance houses, even in the archives. She began developing her own in 2016, and it launched in 2019 with Harvey Nichols and Gleneagles.

Its unisex eaux de parfum draw on geology, wild places and the craft of whisky, and the house says every product is created, blended, matured and hand bottled in Scotland. Metamorphic turns the pressure and heat that change rock into black pepper, tobacco, rose and amber. Kingdom Botanica, launched in 2020 for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's 350th anniversary, uses more than 35 natural ingredients.

Kingdom Scotland has no shop of its own. In Edinburgh its stockists include The Balmoral hotel at 1 Princes Street and the shop at Edinburgh Castle, and outside the city the Gleneagles hotel shops. A 50 ml eau de parfum costs £150. Try Portal first: it is the old Caledonian forest of Scotland, mosses, lichens and ferns under a dense canopy, and the clearest picture of the house's landscape idea.

  1. PortalA gateway to the ancient Caledonian forest, green with moss, lichen and fern.
  2. MetamorphicPressure, heat and time turning stone into something new: pepper, tobacco, dark rose and leather.
  3. AlbauraThe cold silence just before snowfall, in iced juniper, Arctic poppy and rock moss.
  4. Kingdom BotanicaMade with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from ingredients tied to its people, plants and places.
