Brooklyn perfume, made by hand by two sisters
MCMC Fragrances is a family business in Brooklyn, New York, owned and run by sisters. Each original scent is formulated by Anne Serrano-McClain, who studied natural perfumery and aromatherapy before going to Grasse, the French perfume town, to study perfumery. In a 2018 interview with The Creative Independent she described her bench: a sheet of paper, a pen, a scale, pipettes and her ingredients.
The perfumes are made in small batches in Brooklyn from essential oils, absolutes and plant resins sourced around the world. The house says its scents are inspired by travel, memories and people. Most come as a 50 ml eau de parfum or a 10 ml perfume oil, and the range is vegan and free of parabens and phthalates.
MCMC has no shop of its own. In Brooklyn, its stockist list includes Mociun, a shop at 683 Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg, open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm. The house says selection varies by stockist, so call ahead. A 50 ml eau de parfum costs US$98 on its own site. Try Mociun first, the scent that shares the shop's name: bright, bitter Italian neroli over soft musk and amber.
- MociunItalian neroli met on a trip to Sicily, softened with white musk and amber so it wears differently on each person.
- NobleIndian jasmine absolute and Haitian vetiver, two materials that recall time spent in Nepal, over chai, incense, amber and musk.
- HunterTobacco absolute, organic Bourbon vanilla and balsam fir, from a long friendship and building maple sugar cabins in Vermont.
- GardenA bright herbal scent made for the Ananda Harvest, a group of urban farmers who taught themselves to farm in upstate New York.
- MaineA day spent falling in love on North Haven island off Maine, with rose absolute, local clary sage and a beach plum rose.
