The story

Lyn Harris's London perfume laboratory and its handblown bottles

Perfumer H is the London house of British perfumer Lyn Harris, who grew up between Scotland and Yorkshire and trained with Robertet in Grasse. She opened it in October 2015 as a laboratory and shop at 106a Crawford Street in Marylebone, after a two-year project. Wallpaper described the space, fitted out by Retrouvius, in teak, polished brass and smoked glass.

Lyn Harris now works on her own in her London laboratory and still draws on Robertet's materials. The perfumes come in bottles first designed by glassblower Michael Ruh in his London atelier, made to order by hand, coloured and engraved. The handblown bottles can be refilled, so a bottle can be kept for life. Many scents start from a landscape or a childhood memory, from the Scottish Highlands in Rain Wood to Morocco's Haouz Valley in Clay.

Its own shop at 15a Clifford Street, Mayfair, opens Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 18:30 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. The first lab shop on Crawford Street opens by appointment, and to everyone on Saturdays. There is a third shop at 19 Chiltern Street, Marylebone, and a counter in the Fragrance Lounge at Liberty on Regent Street. A 50 ml eau de parfum costs from £145, and a 100 ml handblown bottle of Ink costs £650. Try Ink first: it is one of the house's Icons and smells of blue ink on white paper.

  1. InkBlue ink on white paper and late nights in dim libraries, with papyrus, vetiver and cedar.
  2. Rain WoodLyn's childhood in the Scottish Highlands: galbanum, pepper and myrrh over wet cedar and juniper.
  3. DandelionLong childhood afternoons outdoors, blowing dandelion seeds into the wind.
  4. ClayThe earth of Morocco's Haouz Valley, orange flower over an accord of baked clay and cedar.
  5. MossA cool fern scent of a forest at dawn, with grapefruit, pine needle and tree moss.
