The story

A Myrurgia heir's own perfume house in Barcelona

Ramon Monegal was born in Barcelona in 1951 into the fourth generation of the family behind Myrurgia, the perfume firm that grew from his great-grandfather Esteve Monegal i Prat's drugstore and was founded in 1916. He studied architecture first, began training as a perfumer at the family company in 1972 and created fragrances there for more than thirty years. After Puig bought Myrurgia in 2000 he stepped away, and in 2009 he launched his own house in Barcelona under his name.

The house names him as its master perfumer and traces its story back to 1916 and five generations of the family. The range is split into collections: the Spanish line with Flamenco, Matador and Siesta, a group of ouds such as Alhambra Oud, musks, and a set of scents named after Ibiza.

It sells from its own boutique at Carrer de Calvet 3, 08021 Barcelona, open Monday to Friday with a midday break, and on Saturdays. Most of the Spanish collection costs 195 euros for 50 ml. Try Flamenco first. Monegal made it as a tribute to Andalusia and to flamenco, with raspberry, jasmine and red rose over resins and wood.

  1. FlamencoA tribute to Andalusia and the stamping feet and guitar of flamenco, with raspberry, jasmine and red rose.
  2. MatadorStrength and nerve for those who chase a win before it looks possible, in spices, flowers and leather.
  3. SiestaThe Mediterranean pleasure of doing nothing, with honey, lemon, jasmine and iris.
  4. Alhambra OudThe palaces of the Alhambra in Granada, with orange blossom, rose and an aged Assam oud.
  5. Heritage DropsA new take on a fresh family cologne first made over a century ago for private use, built on Calabrian bergamot.
