The Saltworks Company makes its perfumes by hand in Ramsgate, Kent, in the United Kingdom, and its about page dates its mission to 2013. Its shop and perfumery sit in the town's original Victorian police station, now called The Old Station, and the old police cells are part of the shop.
Each perfume blends 10 to 50 ingredients, with materials from Grasse in France, and every bottle holds 25 percent perfume oil, which the house says breaks the usual strength rules. It makes them in small batches in its Ramsgate workshop. All its scents share one bottle, so you can bring an empty one back to the shop and refill it with the same scent or a new one, saving £20. It also makes candles, soaps and reed diffusers.
Its own shop is at The Old Station, 12 Charlotte Court, in Ramsgate town centre, open every day with shorter hours on Sunday. A 50 ml perfume costs £75 and a 100 ml bottle £95, and a £29 discovery set lets you smell several at home. Try Carmen first: it sets dark black cherry against cumin and saffron over fir balsam and cedar, a study in contrasts.
